Food Detox: Day One

I'm on Day One of a food detox I read about in Whole Living magazine.  Whole Living Action Plan  It intrigued me with the beautiful food and the 21 day plan.  I figure I can do it for 21 days.  Longer than that, maybe not.  Now that birthday season is winding down at our house, three done, one more to go on the 14th, I won't be surrounded by as much temptation like birthday cakes.

Here's what is on the not allowed list:
No processed foods.  No added sugar.  No dairy.  No gluten.  No coffee.  No alcohol.
Yikes.  I gave up coffee a week ago to wean myself off the caffeine.  Otherwise, I'm ready. Let's do it!

The first week is a "cleanse" to help rid the body of toxins.  Week 2 and 3 add foods back in to see how your body handles them.  I went online yesterday, made a shopping list for Week 1 and headed to Whole Foods with Andy and Mary.  I loaded up the cart with all kinds of fresh, organic produce and a few other items.  It was a treat for me to shop there since I'm not a regular shopper at Whole Foods.

This morning it was time to get started.  Here's what I had today:
Breakfast - Mango Tahini Smoothie

If you're wondering what tahini is (like I was when I read the recipe list), tahini is ground roasted sesame seeds similar to peanut butter.

 Lunch - French Lentil Salad
This salad has so many different flavors and textures going.  It was tasty and fun to eat because each bite was a little different.

 Dinner - Creamy Broccoli Soup
Despite the formidable ingredient list which included broccoli, spinach and avocado, this was creamy and delicious.

I don't think I've ever eaten so many different vegetables in one day.  When my tummy was rumbling between meals, I snacked on roasted almonds and grapes.  I also tried the Golden Elixir.  Phewee, be prepared, it has a kick to it.

To prepare for the week, I spent over an hour this morning chopping, cutting and roasting vegetables.  I made the Cleansing Broth, roasted beets and toasted almonds.  My kitchen smelled so good.  The lentil salad and broccoli soup both made big batches so I'll be ready when they come up again on the menu.

Day One summary, so far so good.  I enjoyed the food and hope the prep work I did will save me time for the rest of the week 1 meals.  As for the rest of my family, they're staying on their normal menu.  I'll try to incorporate some of the week 2 and 3 recipes into our menu.
