An unexpected snow day blew into town this morning alerting us with phone calls and emails before 6 a.m. School is closed due to inclement weather. The temperature plummeted 30 degrees overnight which, added to still falling snow, made for very slick roads this morning. When I went to bed last night, my schedule for today included a dentist appointment, DARE graduation at school in the afternoon and picking up George from his piano lesson. At 6 a.m., my schedule changed to: taking care of a house full of four kids for the day with daddy out late for a work dinner. Hmmm....time for flexible, adaptable, the motto of my husband and me.
The kids and I had a great day. We really did. There wasn't much snow outside and it was bitter cold so we decided to stay inside for the day. I jotted down a schedule on the white board and away we went. Every half hour there was a new activity or to do item. Each boy chose one group activity for us to do together. The boys enjoyed wiping off each list item as the day went on.
The boys did three loads of laundry completely on their own from start to finish. They also prepared dinner on their own which included making macaroni and cheese. The two big boys were quite proud of themselves, as they should have been. They did a great job. In between, we played Apples to Apples Jr., a favorite family game around here, and drug out a bunch of toys in the basement. We had the Pizza Planet, Jake's pirate ship, a castle and a car parking garage going with Lightning McQueen cruising by and Captain Hook trying to stay out of Buzz Lightyear's way. Woody saved the day, of course! We had an indoor snowball fight using cotton balls. The two little ones loved it, they were giggling and diving for cover. For some reason, the two year old calls cotton balls "cheese balls". Beware of the cheese balls next time you're over! We read books, watched a movie, ate popcorn and finished the evening with a show and the fireplace going. Bonus, lunches were already made from the night before. Woohoo!
And all four kids were in bed by 8 p.m. The roads look good tonight, back to school tomorrow and mommy's previously scheduled program.
